Babylon Village Elects New Mayor

Following the sudden death of longtime Mayor Ralph Scordino, trustee Mary Adams becomes the first woman to serve as the village's mayor.

BABYLON VILLAGE, NY — Babylon Village trustees appointed a new mayor following the death of Ralph Scordino last week.

On Friday, officials held a special meeting and appointed trustee Mary Adams mayor by a unanimous vote. Adams was sworn in, followed by a moment of silence for Scordino.

Adams became the village's first woman to serve as mayor.

She honored Scordino during the meeting.

"His love for our village, our community, our downtown and our residents was unsurpassed," Adams said. "As we mourn the sudden loss and unexpected death of Mayor Scordino, I can assure everyone that his legacy and vision for our village will continue."

Scordino served as mayor for 16 years after serving as deputy mayor and trustee for over 15 years. Adams, a local real estate agent, was elected trustee in 2016.

"As humbled and honored as I am for taking a leadership role as your mayor, it is bittersweet on a personal level," she said. "I lost a confidant, a teacher, a mentor, a friend and my mayor."
