Long Island Weather: Harvey Remnants Bringing Rain For Labor Day Weekend; Eyes On Irma In Atlantic

The remnants of Hurricane Harvey will bring some wet weather to the island this weekend. Hurricane Irma, though, is the one to watch.

Long Island will see some wet weather this Labor Day weekend from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey, the storm that has killed at least 47 people and brought devastating flooding to Texas. Harvey is now a tropical depression located about 40 miles from Nashville, Tenn. Harvey will continue to weaken before dumping some nuisance rain on the island Saturday and Sunday. No hazardous weather is expected locally.

Any rain should hold off until late in the afternoon Saturday and become more widespread Saturday night into Sunday morning, the National Weather Service says. A rumble of thunder cannot be ruled out as well. The rain will begin to taper off Sunday afternoon. Temperatures will continue to be below normal.

Labor Day Monday is the beach day. It looks perfect with sunny skies and a high near 78.

Irma Strengthening In Atlantic

As Harvey fizzles out, Hurricane Irma, currently way out in the Atlantic, is drawing the spotlight. The National Hurricane Center upgraded Irma to a Category 3 storm early Thursday evening.

As of Friday morning, Irma was packing sustained winds of 115 mph.

"Irma is likely to remain a major hurricane and could become a Category 4 well before it reaches the Lesser Anteilles," said Dan Kottlowski, a hurricane expert with AccuWeather.

In its current position over open water, Irma poses no immediate threat to land. On her projected path, she may become a concern for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic by sometime early next week. It remains too early to tell what, if any, impact Irma might have on the mainland United States.

Harvey and Irma both formed during the peak of the 2017 hurricane season. Forecasters call the period between mid-August and mid-October the “season within the season.” This eight-week period “is often the most active and dangerous time for tropical cyclone activity,” according to NOAA.

While Irma's eventual path remains unclear, Rick Knabb from The Weather Channel said: "We cannot rule out eventual impacts in the continental U.S. This is the reality of what we contend with during the peak of the season, one that has been forecast to be very active and with more than three months to go."
