Long Island Weather: Heat Index To Approach 100 Degrees, Thunderstorms Possible Tuesday

It will be a hot and stormy Tuesday on Long Island, but a big change in the weather is on the way.

It's shaping up to be a hot and stormy Tuesday on Long Island, but some fall-like weather is following close behind. Temperatures will likely hit 90 degrees on parts of the island Tuesday with the heat index (how hot it feels with humidity factored in) approaching 100 degrees.

In New York City, a heat advisory will be in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Things cool off from west to east. The high in East Hampton Tuesday will be about 82 degrees.

There's a chance of showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

"While there is a severe weather risk to the west of Long Island this looks to be another case where the thunderstorms are likely to weaken or fall apart before they get here so I don’t think we have a severe weather issue to be concerned with," Joe Cioffi, a meteorologist for WPIX-TV and FiOS1 News, wrote on his website.

Slightly cooler weather arrives Wednesday and then Canadian high pressure will build into the region Thursday through early next week, providing dry and sunny conditions. Temperatures will be below normal as highs only reach the 70s to near 80 each day, the NWS says.
