How To Get A Free Flu Shot In Suffolk County

Officials announced two events this month that will offer free flu shots to residents who cannot get it through their health insurance.

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — With the flu running rampant across the country, Suffolk County officials are giving residents a chance to get free flu shots. Earlier this month, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that the latest data from the agency, current as of the week ending Dec. 21, showed the virus was widespread in 39 states, including New York.

There were about 5,300 laboratory-confirmed flu reports in New York, up 62 percent over the previous week. The number of patients hospitalized with lab-confirmed flu was 520, up 1 percent over the previous week.

As a result, Steve Bellone, the Suffolk County executive, and Dr. James Tomarken, the county health commissioner, announced Tuesday the county will offer free flu immunizations to residents 6 months or older who are uninsured or whose health insurance does not cover the shot.

"The health and wellness of our residents is of utmost importance," Bellone said. "The flu has been on the rise and we want residents to know it is not too late to protect yourself and your loved ones from what can turn into a debilitating disease by getting immunized as soon as possible."

First, the county will be offering free flu shots Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the county Department of Health Services Administration Board Room on 3500 Sunrise Hwy., Suite 124, in Great River. A second event is planned at the Riverhead Library on Tuesday, January 21, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on 330 Court St. Residents should enter on Osborne Avenue.
