Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci, Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer, Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. and families in need of assistance called upon members of the New York State Legislature to pass legislation that will allow charities to better assist families in need by exempting them from draconian insurance regulations.

Supervisors Lupinacci and Schaffer are asking that Albany exempt charities that have no payroll and do not charge for material or labor from the insurance regulation when assisting families. Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. volunteers donate their time and materials and all the participating contractors are fully insured.

"To me this makes the most sense,” stated Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer. “You have a group of people who want to donate their time and resources to help others and all it requires is an exception from a law that should not even apply to them. This should be a no-brainer."

“I am proud to stand with Supervisor Schaffer to call upon our state representatives in eliminating any impediments to donating these essential services to families in need so that Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. and other charitable organizations can afford to make a difference in these families lives,” said Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci.

“We would like to thank Supervisor Schaffer and Supervisor Lupinacci for their support on this very important issue,” said Lois Fricke, Operations Director of Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. “We and other charities want to help children and families in need, if this exemption does not happen the only ones to be hurt are those in need of a safe and comfortable home to live in with their family.”

10-year old Aliah Scoma of Huntington Station was born with congenital heart disease,

Chromosomal Abnormality and Micro deletion of Chromosome 15 which leads to developmental delays such as speech and vision impairment and cerebral palsy on her right side. Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. is seeking to donate the necessary improvements, renovations, and repairs on her home but have not been able to because they cannot afford the state mandated insurance coverage.

“We want to thank Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. for all they are doing for Aliah and our family,” said Erica Scoma, 10-year old Aliah’s mother. “We would love to have an expansion to her bedroom for in-home physical therapy and have access to all her equipment to assist her with her basic daily needs such as taking a bath and moving about her home without barriers or restrictions. Things we simply take for granted but are life changing for our daughter’s growth and development.”
