Sand Replenishment Project To Begin At Gilgo Beach State Park

The sand stockpile at Robert Moses State Park will be utilized to help repair winter erosion damage.

March 18, 2021

The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, began placing 5,000 cubic yards of sand on the beach at Gilgo Beach State Park in Suffolk County to repair winter erosion damage March 15. This sand will be placed along the entrance and slightly eastward to stabilize that area so the park can open for fishing and surfing special access permit usage on April 1st, 2021.

The sand stockpile at Robert Moses State Park, 10 miles east, to Gilgo Beach State Park will be utilized.

Motorists may encounter minor delays in the area. One lane on Ocean Parkway at the entrance to Gilgo Beach State Park will be closed so that the truck can off-load the sand on the beach in that area.

Gilgo State Park is located on a barrier beach on the south shore of Long Island, with Atlantic Ocean and Great South Bay frontage. The park is undeveloped. Access to the park is via 4-wheel-drive vehicle only and requires a permit. Spectacular views and tranquility make this a popular destination for surfing and fishing. Anglers enjoy surf fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Fishing is abundant in the fall during the striped bass migration. Anglers may also catch blue fish and a variety of salt-water species. Wave conditions offer excellent surfing opportunities.
