LONG ISLAND, NY — A winter storm watch has been issued for Long Island as confidence continues to increase in the area getting socked with heavy snow, powerful winds and coastal flooding on Monday.

The storm watch will be in effect from midnight Sunday until 6 a.m. Tuesday. Snow accumulation of 6-12 inches is expected for Nassau County and western Suffolk County. The East End, where snow could mix with rain at times, will likely see 5-8 inches of snow.

Snow will gradually overspread the region late Sunday night, with the heaviest precipitation occurring during the day on Monday and into the first half of Monday night, the National Weather Service says.

Wind gusts up to 55 mph may cause near-blizzard conditions on the island. Travel could be very difficult with impacts to the Monday morning and evening commutes.

While most of the accumulating snow ends by Tuesday morning, some additional light amounts may occur, the weather service says.
