Strong Thunderstorms to Close The Weekend on Long Island

Some nasty weather will target Long Island on Sunday as the weekend comes to a wet, stormy close.

There's a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms during the day with cloudy skies becoming mostly sunny, but the odds of storms will rise Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS says thunderstorms could produce heavy rain, but AccuWeather is a bit more dramatic.

"The main threats from these storms are going to be isolated damaging wind gusts to 60 mph, which can bring down trees and power lines," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards says. "Aside from the damaging winds, the storms will produce rainfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour. That can lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poor drainage areas."

Sunday- A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind 9 to 14 mph.

Sunday Night- Showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between midnight and 2am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Low around 69. South wind around 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Monday- Sunny, with a high near 84. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph.

Monday Night- Clear, with a low around 58. North wind 10 to 14 mph.

Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 80. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming west in the afternoon.
