There has recently been incorrect information circulating on social media about the purpose of this public hearing - The Town of Babylon Community Development Program receives funding from the federal government every year, through the CDBG Program, administered by HUD. These funds are used for infrastructure improvements throughout the Town, to renovate existing homes to be resold to qualified residents, and to run programs such as the first-time homebuyer down payment assistance program. As a recipient of federal grant funds, the Town of Babylon is required by HUD to prepare a Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan. That plan calls for public comment and participation from residents regarding what the Town priorities should be for this funding. This public hearing is NOT about “low-income housing,” but rather federal programs such as “first-time homebuyer down payment assistance” and public infrastructure improvements. This public hearing does NOT involve a proposal to build any specific housing anywhere in the Town. This public hearing does NOT involve building low-income housing in Babylon Village. This public hearing is held every year as required by HUD, in order for the Town receives it’s share of federal funding to assist in infrastructure improvements homebuyer programs throughout the Town. For an example of how this federal grant funding has been spent in the past, please view the 2020 Action Plan here, and scroll to pages 104-108.
