Thanksgiving Pizza Serves Traditional Feast On A Pie

The "Cran-Slam" specialty pizza is sold in Queens and features a three-course Thanksgiving meal atop a traditional mozzarella pie.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS – The Thanksgiving feast is being served with all the trimmings in Queens – on top of a mozzarella pizza pie.

Krave It Sandwich Shop and Eatery in Bayside is packing a full three-course meal of Thanksgiving staple foods onto the specialty pizza in honor of the holiday. The creation, dubbed the 'Cran-Slam', is topped with turkey breast, cornbread stuffing, mashed sweet potatoes, marshmallows, brown gravy and cranberry sauce.

Owner Vishee Mandahar said he came up with the 'Cran-Slam' in less than a day as he tried to put a unique twist on the way his favorite Thanksgiving comfort foods were served.

"Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, so I wanted to make a really cool Thanksgiving pizza that didn't just look good, but tasted good," Mandahar said.

He starts by spreading homemade mashed sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing and marshmallows atop a traditional cooked mozzarella pie. Hand-carved turkey breast, cut from entire turkeys the eatery cooks itself, are lined along the pie's edge and drizzled with brown gravy. Finally, the entire pizza is covered in a swirl of homemade cranberry sauce.

Mandahar said the pizza has grown extremely popular since he started serving it two weeks ago.

"We've been very busy with it," he said. "We have pre-orders in for today and tomorrow, so it's been selling very good."

Krave It will serve up the Cran-Slam through Thanksgiving Day at $5 a slice or $40 a pie. The eatery will be open on Thanksgiving from noon t0 3 p.m., and Mandahar is anticipating a rush of customers eager for his seasonal dish. On Wednesday, he had 15 to 20 turkeys roasting in preparation.

While new customers may be in awe of the specialty pizza, it's nothing new for Mandahar who's been serving up pizza masterpieces and other comfort foods with a twist since he opened Krave It two years ago. On July 4, for example, the eatery served up hot dog and cheeseburger pizzas. Customers should also stay tuned for a specialty Christmas pizza in the works, he said.

"We are all about serving comfort food," Mandahar said. "We do all kinds of traditional stuff."
