Each winner received $5,000, plus an additional $2,500 for their school.

Norwich majored in physics during college, but it took her 18 years working in the private sector before she finally realized her dream of becoming a physics teacher, according to a press release.

In her third year at Bayside High School, where she teaches regents physics and AP physics, she was voted Teacher of the Year.

"I want you to know, each of you, that you all matter," she told students in her acceptance speech that year. "That is, unless you multiply yourselves by the speed of light, then you are all energy. For those of you in my classes who don't get the joke, come see me."
