Bayside Hospital Wins Award For Its High Quality Care
St. Mary's Hospital for Children was recognized for its commitment to improving care for people with disabilities with a national award.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — St. Mary's Hospital for Children was recognized for its high quality care this week.
The Bayside hospital, which specializes in caring for children with complex medical conditions and disabilities, was awarded with a Bronze Commitment to Quality Award by the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) for its commitment to improving quality care for people with disabilities.
The award is part of a three-tier program by the AHCA/NCAL, meaning that St. Mary’s will later be eligible to receive silver, and then gold-level awards, as it continues to advance its performance and care.

The AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers Chair Tammy Kelly said in a statement that she “applaud[s] the resiliency of St. Mary’s” especially during “one of the most challenging years in recent history.”
St. Mary’s delivers care to children with all kinds of severe injuries and medical conditions — many of whom cannot receive the support elsewhere.

But, the hospital struggled with how to deliver its regular slate of programs and supportive care amid the pandemic.
St. Mary’s had to close its medical day care program for young adults with disabilities — which was reopened in April — and when the hospital closed its doors to visitors in June of last year, it accommodated dozens of parents who moved in alongside their children.
This award recognizes the hard work of our incredible team and I want to thank them for their tireless dedication to the children and families at St. Mary’s,” said Dr. Edwin Simpser, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Healthcare System for Children, expressing gratitude to the AHCA/NCAL, the hospital’s healthcare providers, and its patients, too.
“Our kids face tremendous obstacles, but their unparalleled determination inspires all of us each day,” he said.
St. Mary's Hospital for Children will receive its award at the AHCA/NCAL’s 72nd Convention & Expo in Maryland, which will be held this fall from October 10-13, 2021.
