Bayside Park Gets New $1.6M Soccer Fields

The soccer fields opened to the public Tuesday.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Soccer fields in Little Bay Park opened to the public Tuesday after undergoing a $1.6 million reconstruction, the Parks Department said.

Numerous facilities in the park has been undergoing renovations since April 2016, according to the city.

The park's drainage system was upgraded through increasing the incline on soccer fields, a spokesman for the Parks Department said. The water flow was directed off the fields and into bioswales.

Additionally, a water fountain and walking path were installed around the fields, the Parks Department said. New trees were planted around the fields' perimeter and benches were installed.

Lighting will also be put in place around the pathway with $750,000 allocated for the project by Councilmember Paul Vallone.

“Before construction, the fields were severely compacted and worn, a testament to how well-loved they were," said Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver.

"We’ve completely revived them and are thrilled to open them today along with a brand new walking path, additional trees, more benches and better drainage — improving the experience of players and spectators alike.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new fields took place Tuesday. The park had previously got a new restroom in February 2016 and a new parking lot with a storm water management system in May 2015.
