The Best Beginning-Of-The-Summer Ice Cream Is In Bayside: Report

A newsletter from the New York Times gave an award-winning ice cream and Italian ice shop in Bayside a shoutout. Find out which one here.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — If you’re looking to treat yourself to some beginning-of-the-summer ice cream this Memorial Day weekend, one of the best places to go is an award-winning shop in Bayside, according to a new newsletter from the New York Times.

Summer in The City, the Times’ weekly summer newsletter which details the best summertime goings on citywide from Memorial Day through Labor Day, gave Bayside’s Pesso’s Ices & Ice Cream a shoutout in its first iteration this week.

The ice cream and Italian ice shop, which reopened for the summer on March 5 and was crowned the best ice cream shop in Queens — for the fifth consecutive year — a couple of days later, is open from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

The Times’ critics have described the display case, which has an assortment of up to 80 flavors on any day, as akin to “a piece of pop art.”

Plus, all of the Italian ices, ice cream, and gelato is made in house — and has been by a father-and-son duo since 2004.

The shop at 203-20 35th Ave has a walk-up window for in-person pickup, or a website for ordering online.

The Times’ summer newsletter also gave a few other Queens-based shout outs: They named Rockaway Beach, which opens for the season this week, the 29th Street Block Party in Long Island City, and Museum of the Moving Image’s screening of “2001: A Space Odyssey” as among the best ways to spend your first summer long weekend.
