WHITESTONE, QUEENS — The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge has debuted a new design meant to improve drivers' access to the Whitestone Expressway and Cross Island Parkway in Queens.

The $5.6 million redesign adds a lane where the bridge connects to the Whitestone Expressway and an exit ramp to the Cross Island Parkway.

It also includes new guide rails, a new LED lighting system and new overhead signs, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates the bridge.

“This improvement for the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge is truly a game-changer for those traveling to Queens and Long Island,” Daniel DeCrescenzo, acting president of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, said. "The new lane design will provide a safer and more efficient ride for those taking the Cross Island or Whitestone Expressway."

Construction started in April and wrapped up ahead of schedule in mid-June, due to reduced traffic during the coronavirus pandemic.
