Car Theft On The Rise As Police Warn Drivers To Protect Themselves

"Never leave your vehicle running, even for a few seconds," police say.

DOUGLASTON, QUEENS — Lock it or lose it, police say, as vehicle theft is on the rise within the NYPD’s 111th Precinct.

These neighborhoods include Douglaston, Bayside, Little Neck, Auburndale, Hollis Hills and Fresh Meadows.

Police say that drivers can protect themselves and their vehicles by following a number of steps.

Drivers should, first and foremost, remove all valuables from the car, including extra sets of keys. When possible, residents should park in well-lit locations, avoiding isolated areas. Police also encourage residents to arm their alarm systems when parking.

Most importantly, police say, drivers should never leave their cars running — not even for a few seconds.

The NYPD offers free VIN etching on cars in order to deter theft. The VIN (vehicle verification number) program can be requested by contacting the 111th Precinct’s crime prevention officer at (718) 279-5215.
