Easy Living In Bayside: Ways To Unwind In Your Neighborhood

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — Busy schedules are commonplace in a metro as populous as New York City. Life can be so fast paced that there a daylong celebration of needful leisure is celebrated Aug. 15 for National Relaxation Day.

But in the Bayside area of Queens, there are a number of ways to unwind throughout the week.

Here are some events around Bayside for residents looking to unwind this week:

Music for the soul

Where: 18-36 Bell Blvd.

Sean Condron, born in Queens to Irish parents, is a modern-day bard whose repertoire spans the length and breadth fo American music, according to the Queens Library. From sentimental favorites to Italian and Spanish classics (and everything in between), Condron is armed with just a guitar and his voice, the library says.

Condron plays at the library in Bay Terrace on Aug. 17 from 1 to 2 p.m.


Knitting and crocheting: join the club

Where: 249-01 Northern Blvd.

The Douglaston branch of Queens Library holds a meeting with the local knitting and crocheting club, open to the public, on Aug. 14 from 3:30 to 5 p.m.

Adults, teens and children of all ages and levels are welcome to attend. The library encourages participants to bring their own yarn, needles and ideas. Space is limited, and registration is available by calling the Douglaston branch at (718) 225-8414.


An afternoon of theater

Where: 18-36 Bell Blvd.

Actress Leah Abrams performs selected readings on Aug. 14 and then transitions to a lecture on playwrights Gina Gionfriddo and Wendy Wasserstein.

Registration is not required, and the program is open to the public from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at the Bay Terrace branch of Queens Library.


A stroll through Crocheron Park

Where: 214th Street and 35th Avenue

Crocheron Park, named after the Crocheron family who lived on the edge of Little Neck Bay for centuries, is host to a veritable forest, playground, tennis courts, a baseball diamond and a field house. Visitors can also take in the views of Little Neck bay from either of the gazebos that stand on the bluff.

According to Livestrong.com, a regular walking routine lowers blood pressure, prevents cardiovascular disease and helps maintain weight loss after dieting.


Artistic expression for children: paint it, sculpt it, draw it

Where: 214-20 Northern Blvd.

Adults aren't the only ones who need to decompress during the week. At the Queens Library's Bayside branch, children ages 8 to 12 will learn painting techniques, clay sculpturing and other artistic practice in a three-session art workshop that begins Aug. 15.

Other sessions will be held Aug. 22 and 29. Each workshop is from 1 to 3 p.m. Registration is available by contacting the library at (718) 229-1834.
