Family-Owned MovieWorld Takes Over Great Neck's Squire Cinemas
MovieWorld had to close its Douglaston movie theater last year. Now the beloved cinema and its affordable ticket prices are back.

GREAT NECK, NY — Locals devastated by MovieWorld leaving Douglaston Plaza last year finally have some good news. The family-owned movie theater company has taken over Squire Cinemas in Great Neck.
MovieWorld is the new owner of Great Neck's Squire Theater, the family-owned company announced on Facebook. The movie theater, previously operated by Bow Tie Cinemas, officially changed hands on April 1.
MovieWorld, originally established in 1983, closed its theater in the Douglaston Plaza shopping center last summer to make way for Lowe’s Home Improvement, QNS reported. A 2017 petition to save the movie theater had garnered 1,600 signatures, with signatories praising the theater's affordability.

"Everybody's missed it quite a bit," said Russell Levinson, who worked at MovieWorld for eight years and now runs operations at Squire Cinemas. "I haven't been working at a movie theater since we closed in July."
Tickets at Squire Theater will cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children, according to the Facebook post. The ticket price drops to $7 before 4 p.m. daily. Tickets on Tuesday will cost $6 for everyone. Anyone who likes the theater's Facebook page or mentions "MovieWorld" will get free popcorn.
