Great Neck's Squire Theater Closes Permanently

The Squire Theater has closed, a year and a half after MovieWorld took over the historic movie theater.

GREAT NECK, NY —MovieWorld has permanently closed Great Neck Cinemas at the Squire, a year and a half after the family-owned company took over the movie theater.

The theater, which dates back to 1935, announced the news by posting a photograph of its front marquee reading "closed" alongside the date range 1935-2020.

"We are closing due to the pandemic," the Squire wrote in an emailed statement to Patch. "With no revenue for 6 months, and our rent and utilities piling up, there is no way to continue."

MovieWorld acquired the Squire Theater from Bow Tie Cinemas in April 2019.

The movie theater company became beloved in Northeast Queens for the affordable ticket prices at its cinema in the Douglaston Plaza shopping center, which closed in summer 2018.

Tickets at the Squire Theater cost $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children, and went cheaper at select times.

Now, the building is for sale for $5.5 million.
