Summertime At The Library: Free Family Programs Before School Starts

As the school year looms near, the Queens Library offers a bounty of free programs for Bayside and Douglaston families this weekend.

BAYSIDE, QUEENS — As the summer inches into the final month before parents and children begin shopping around for back-to-school supplies, there remain just five more weekends between Aug. 3 and the first day of school on Sept. 7 — making these next few weekends that much more valuable.

But learning can be fun at the Queens Library.

Here are a few ways that Bayside and Douglaston parents can seize the day with their little ones through the weekend:

Book Buddies


Address: 214-20 Northern Blvd.

Neighborhood: Bayside

Children in prekindergarten through third grade can buddy up with a teen volunteer to read a book from the library’s bountiful collection. The program will be held Aug. 4 from 4 to 5 p.m. No registration is required. Read-to-Me Club


Address: 18-36 Bell Blvd.

Neighborhood: Bayside

Children ages 3 to 5, alongside their adult caregivers, will be treated to a story, songs and rhymes before working together on a related crafts project. All materials will be supplied by the library. The program is set for Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to noon. Registration is not required.


Picture Book


Address: 214-20 Northern Blvd.

Neighborhood: Bayside

This program is open to children, from about 3 to 5 years old, and their parents. A member of the library’s staff will sit down with families for a half-hour of story time on Aug. 7 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. No registration is required.


Create A Collage Portrait Of Your House

Address: 249-01 Northern Blvd.

Neighborhood: Douglaston

Alacia Stubbs will assist participants of this program will creating a collage portrait of participants’ houses. Participants are encouraged to arrive early as there will be a limited amount of supplies available. Registration is available online or by calling (718) 225-8414.


Korean Drum Workshop

Address: 214-20 Northern Blvd.

Neighborhood: Bayside

Parents and children are invited to explore the world of traditional Korean drumming. The drum workshop will allow participants to experience new types of drums, rhythms and beats. Registration is available online or by calling (718) 229-1834. As of Aug. 3, 25 openings remain.
