A lecture series with the Queens Historical Society, led by Richard Hourahan, centers on the early history of Queens County. The program will be held 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Bay Terrace branch of Queens Library, and no registration is required to attend.

The Queens Library of Bay Terrace, as part of the library's Film Festival Fridays, is screening Jordan Peele's "Get Out," rated R, at 2 p.m. "Get Out" follows Chris Washington, a black man, and his girlfriend Allison, a white woman, who reach the meet-the-parents milestone of dating.

Chris chalks the parents' overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend unfolds, a series of increasingly disturbing events leads Chris to a truth that he couldn't have imagined.

The program will be held 2 to 4 p.m., and registration is not required.


Knit a scarf for a U.S. service member


When: Friday, Aug. 11

Where: 249-01 Northern Blvd.

The Douglaston-Little Neck branch of Queens Library is calling on local teens to join library staff for an afternoon of knitting and crocheting from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Participating teens will work as a team to help keep America's troops warm during the winter.

Each participant will be paired with a seasoned knitter or crocheter. Supplies will be provided, and space is limited. Registration is available online or by calling the branch at (718) 225-8414.


Play chess and board games at Douglaston library

Where: 249-01 Northern Blvd.

Queens Library's Douglaston-Little Neck branch, as part of the branch's Teen Summer Reading Program, hosts a late afternoon of chess and board games from 3 to 5 p.m. Registration is available online as well as by calling the library at (718) 225-8414.


Take the family to see "A Bug's Life" in the park


When: Friday, Aug. 11

Where: Crocheron Park

Organized by Northeast Queens Parks, Crocheron Park transforms into an outdoor movie theater on Friday from 7:30 to 11 p.m. The film, "A Bug's Life," is rated G and centers on an inventive ant who bands together with a bunch of misfit insects to help save his colony.
