6-Year-Old Killed By School Bus In Brooklyn Hit And Run: Cops

BROOKLYN, NY — A 6-year-old on his way to school in Brooklyn was killed by a school bus in a hit-and-run crash Wednesday morning, according to police and reports.

Shimon Fried was hit just outside his home on South Fifth Street between Hooper and Hewes streets around 8:30 a.m., police said.

According to the Brooklyn Paper, Shimon had been on his way to school with his 9-year-old brother when a yellow bus hit and dragged him before driving off. His brother got on the bus just before the crash, the outlet reported.

An MTA bus driver found Shimon on the street about five minutes later and alerted authorities, who found the young boy unconscious and unresponsive, according to police and reports. He was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

The driver who hit Shimon was found a short time after the crash and has been taken into custody, an NYPD spokesperson said. The spokesperson did not immediately know what he was charged with.

“This is a tragedy for all involved and our hearts go out to the child’s family as well as to our colleague driving the B60 bus that came upon the scene and first discovered the horrible aftermath,” said President of MTA Buses Craig Cipriano in a statement. “We are fully cooperating with the NYPD investigation and providing all possible support to the bus operator as she recovers from trauma.”
