Bed-Stuy Nears 50-Percent Vaccination Rate: Data

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — After lagging other parts of New York City at the start of the coronavirus vaccine effort, Bed-Stuy is nearing the halfway mark for getting its residents vaccinated against the virus, data shows.

The first of the five ZIP codes that span Bed-Stuy reached the 50-percent vaccination rate this week, meaning half of its adult residents have gotten at least the first of two shots against the coronavirus, city data shows.

The rest of the neighborhood's ZIP codes are nearing the marker with more than 40 percent vaccine rates in all but 11233, which also includes Ocean Hill and Brownsville. Only 32 percent of residents have been partially vaccinated in that ZIP code.

The vaccine rates come several weeks after the first Brooklyn ZIP codes — in mainly wealthier, majority-white neighborhoods — reached the 50-percent milestone.

The city has struggled to reach New Yorkers of color and the neighborhoods hardest-hit by the coronavirus crisis since the start of its vaccine distribution.

Brooklyn in particular has consistently lagged behind the other boroughs in its vaccine rates. As of Wednesday, 44 percent of adult Brooklynites had gotten at least their first dose of the vaccine, compared to 49-percent citywide.

The highest vaccination rates continue to be in wealthy Manhattan ZIP codes, where the rate of those partially vaccinated is as high as 79 percent.
