Bed-Stuy ZIP Codes Have Some Of NYC's Lowest Vaccination Rates

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — ZIP codes covering Bed-Stuy have some of the lowest coronavirus vaccination rates in New York City, new data shows.

A newly released set of data by the city on Tuesday shows the percentage of residents in each New York City ZIP code that have already gotten at least one of the vaccination shots, and the number that are now fully vaccinated against the virus.

In Bed-Stuy, only 2 to 3 percent of residents have been fully vaccinated in the five ZIP codes that include at least a portion of the neighborhood, despite the fact that Bed-Stuy is among the 33 hard-hit neighborhoods health officials said they would target with vaccine distribution.

2 percent, shared by several other neighborhoods across the city, is the lowest vaccination rate in the ZIP code-level data.

The new data reveals those low percentages are found in many of the neighborhoods hardest-hit by the virus, while the highest vaccination rates include wealthy Manhattan ZIP codes and other majority-white neighborhoods. The highest vaccine rate is found in City Island, where nearly 25 percent of residents have been fully vaccinated.

The data has sparked debate about the city's efforts to vaccinate people of color and disadvantaged New Yorkers who both bore the pandemic's brunt, which Mayor Bill de Blasio has said is a priority in the vaccine's rollout.

Brooklyn as a whole has the lowest vaccination rate of all five boroughs.

In total, 10 percent of all New Yorkers have now received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine.
