Bed-Stuy's Newest Playground Has Its Own Bar

The Sumner Playground got a $4.2 million dollar make-over that includes a neat row of white bar stools overlooking the park.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — It's time saddle up to the playground.

Sumner Playground reopened to the public Thursday after receiving a $4.2 million renovation that includes new play equipment and a row of bar stools, Parks Department officials announced.

Kids of all ages can now enjoy a new ball field, playground, and "sky box" bar stools at the renovated park on Throop Avenue near Myrtle Avenue, officials said.

“Sumner Playground is a beloved community space in Central Brooklyn” said NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver. "And we are thrilled to reopen it with a beautiful renovation."

The Playground got brand new swings and spray showers for kids and adults can now enjoy an outdoor fitness center and row of white bar stools, the first ever in a New York City Park.

The ball field got natural turf, new dugouts and bleachers, and the basketball courts were completely reconstructed, according to the Parks Department.

Garden seating and new shaded plazas were also installed to "beautify the playground," according to a press statement.

"Bed-Stuy families will now be able to enjoy the park’s new amenities in a beautiful setting," said City Councilman Robert Cornegy.

"It gives me great joy to witness the revitalization of our local parks and playgrounds.”
