Coronavirus Cases Close 2 Bed-Stuy School Buildings: DOE

A MacDonough Street and Macon Street building are facing a 24-hour closure after multiple coronavirus cases were reported at the schools.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — Two more Bed-Stuy schools were closed for in-person learning on Monday after multiple coronavirus cases were detected in the building, according to the Department of Education.

The I.S. 35 campus on MacDonough Street and P.S. 262 on Macon Street were among the 26 schools across the five boroughs facing a 24-hour closure Monday after coronavirus cases were reported at the buildings in the last week, according to the Department of Education and their map of active COVID-19 cases.

At I.S. 35, a classroom was closed at M.S. 35 on Nov. 2 and another in the Brooklyn Brownstone School was closed on Saturday before the building was ultimately shut down.

At P.S. 262, a classroom at EMBER Charter School, which shares the building, was closed on Friday and a classroom at P.S. 262 El Hajj Malik El Shabazz Elementary School was closed Saturday, according to the map.

Per DOE policy, a school building is closed when there are at least two cases from different classrooms, from an activity or exposure outside of school or when the link between them cannot be determined, according to the DOE.

In each case, the building is temporarily closed while the DOE starts an investigation into the cases. In the scenario when a link between the cases cannot be determined, the school is closed for 14 days, according to the guidelines.

The Bed-Stuy buildings are the latest in the neighborhood to be closed because of coronavirus cases. Most recently, P.S. 308 on Quincy Street reopened Nov. 8 after a two-week closure at the school.

Across the five boroughs, there were 26 one-day school closures and 26 two-week closures as of Monday. Education officials have temporarily shut down more than 100 schools since buildings began to reopen for in-person learning in September.
