A King Amongst Kings
How one Bed Stuy resident is pursuing his dream, while simultaneously helping our youth get closer to theirs.
The Story of Coach Dontae King is the story of a young man with a passion and love for the game of basketball. He always felt like he was destined to do great things, however due to age, lack of experience, lack of opportunity, or the combination of all three, Mr. king had yet to make his mark on the world. With father being an elite level high school basketball coach in NYC for several years, he knew coaching was in his DNA, but how could he create his own legacy without living in his father’s shadow.
Fast forward to the winter of 2016, King who at the time was home from college on break decided to become the change he wished to see happen in his community. Mr. King reached out to Commissioner Warren McIntosh regarding a coaching opportunity in the 2016 Almighty 2 Winter Games. King not only took advantage of the opportunity, but took the NYC basketball scene by storm at the tender age of 21. Since that time the two have come together to start the Young Kings Basketball program. With a 3rd place finish in the 2017 Southern Spotlight Invitational (Atlanta, Ga) and multiple NYC summer basketball circuit championships, the program has become an intricate part in the development of some Brooklyn’s up and coming stars in the making.
It doesn't stop with what happens on the court as Dontae continues to be a big brother, mentor, coach, and overall go to guy, for just about any situation the children face. He continues to set an example for our youth , as he shoulders such a load while still in the process of obtaining a degree from Jefferson Community College. With goals of securing a head coaching positon, Dontae continues the pursuit of greatness “BY ANY MEANS”.
