Man Who Opened Fire On Cops In Bed-Stuy Faces Life In Prison: DA
Boyce Hayward was arraigned Thursday for the night he shot at officers moments after fatally shooting a man in a car, prosecutors said.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — The man accused of open firing at officers in Bed-Stuy moments after shooting two men in a car could face life in prison for the crimes, prosecutors said.
Boyce Hayward, 26, was arraigned over video from his bed at Brookdale University Hospital on Thursday on a 36-count indictment stemming from the shoot-out near Saratoga Park last week that left one officer injured and a 28-year-old man dead, prosecutors said.
Hayward faces, murder, attempted murder of a police officer and other charges. He is accused of shooting into a car — killing one of the men inside and injuring the other — before open firing at officers a few blocks away who had been responding to the shooting, according to officials.

“This defendant’s allegedly brazen actions left an innocent man dead and two others injured, including a police officer, who fortunately was protected from more serious injuries by his bulletproof vest," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. "We will now seek to bring this defendant to justice for allegedly shooting three individuals and endangering many others.
According to investigators, Hayward walked up to a white SUV at the corner of Madison Street and Broadway around 11:11 p.m. on May 12 and shot at three men inside. Randall Roberts, 28, was killed and another passenger was seriously injured, prosecutors said.

Minutes later, three officers who had been on patrol a few blocks away and heard about the shooting, saw Hayward walking near Saratoga Park, prosecutors said.
On of the officers, Officer Brian McGurran, walked toward Hayward, who immediately turned around and shot at him multiple times, prosecutors said. McGurran was hit in the back, the buttocks and the thigh and has since been treated and released from the hospital.
Hayward was shot in the buttocks when the officers fired back in his direction, prosecutors said.
He is being held without bail and will return to court in July.
