MTA Opening New Nostrand Avenue Subway Station Entrance

Reopening the old Bedford Avenue entrance will ease overcrowding and allow north-south platform transfers in the station, officials said.

The Nostrand Avenue A/C station entrance on Nostrand and Fulton soon will be joined by entrances a block away.

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, BROOKLYN — Subway passengers soon will have a new way in and out of Nostrand Avenue's A/C station, MTA officials said.

Well, maybe not so new — the plan announced Thursday will reopen entrances to Bedford Avenue that have been closed for more than 30 years, officials said.

Entrances at the northeast and southeast corners of Bedford Avenue and Fulton Street will open later this year, according to a press release.

State Assembly Member Tremaine S. Wright and state Sen. Velmanette Montgomery advanced the reopening to help ease overcrowding at the busy station, the release states.

“This reopening has been a long time coming," Montgomery said in a statement. "The remaining entrances at the Nostrand Avenue AC station have become severely overcrowded and impossible to navigate during rush hours."

More than 36,000 passengers go through the station every day, Wright said in a statement.

The Bedford entrances will not only reduce crowding, but also provide free in-station transfer between northbound and southbound platforms and provide a direct connection to the northbound B44 Select Bus Service, MTA officials said.

The project will cost $2 million, officials said.

MTA closed the entrance because of crime concerns three decades ago, officials said.
