NYCHA Watch List Shows Huge Backlog of Repairs

Tompkins Houses in Bed-Stuy ranked #15 citywide, amongst developments with the most outstanding requests.

A new website tracking New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) repairs confirms what many have thought all along: NYCHA is sorely behind in fixing up their buildings.

Launched Friday by Public Advocate Bill deBlasio, NYCHAwatchlist.com was created "to help increase transparency and accountability for repairs at the New York City Housing Authority."

The website ranks 349 NYCHA developments with a total of 369,090 outstanding work orders as of Feb. 15, 2013. All 18 housing developments within Bed-Stuy had outstanding requests for repairs, with its largest development, Tompkins Houses, located at 919 Myrtle Avenue, ranking #15 citywide, amongst developments with the most outstanding requests.

Tompkins Houses also showed the greatest number of outstanding requests in Bedford-Stuyvesant, 2,535, with an average of 243 days those requests went unresolved. Although floors, windows and interiors accounted for the biggest percentage of complaints (39.4 percent) in Tompkins Houses, fire and safety complaints have gone the longest time (320 days) unresolved.

Sumner Houses, located at 10 Lewis Avenue, was next: It ranked #19 citywide, with 2,273 total outstanding requests and an average of 325 days those requests were unresolved. Again, floors, windows and interiors accounted for the biggest number of complaints (40.1 percent). But requests for extermination averaged the longest time period (521 days) those complaints went unaddressed.
