Photos: 'Wholesome Foods Market' Opening Soon in Bed-Stuy

The organic supermarket could start welcoming customers as soon as Jan. 2.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — A new organic supermarket will be opening in Bed-Stuy as early as Jan. 2.

Wholesome Foods Market, located at 1306 Atlantic Ave., is currently stocking its shelves and waiting for the gas to be turned on, according to Omar Haimed, who said his brother Ammar owns the business.

The market will stock "all-natural, organic products," Haimed said, including vegan offerings, prepared foods, salads, natural juices and smoothies.

It will also initially offer deliveries within a 10-block radius, but that could expand with demand, Haimed said, adding that the business will be open seven days a week, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Haimed said that while Jan. 2 is the goal for opening day, it's possible things will be delayed a bit if the gas doesn't come on in time. He said the store will start hiring 10 days before it opens, and will likely put a sign in the window to let people know about job opportunities. He also said that applicants can come by the store any time during business hours, since he and his fellow workers are there all day getting things ready.

The Wall Street Journal reported the planned business last year, noting that its owners had signed a 15-year-lease for the property, which formerly housed a dollar store.
