BROOKLYN, NY — A Brooklyn man who terrorized women for months at the Morgan Avenue subway station could be sentenced to life in prison if he is convicted, prosecutors said this week.

Khari Covington, 29, was arraigned Wednesday on a 52-count indictment for the seven East Williamsburg attacks. Covington was arrested in early January on assault, strangulation, burglary and hate crimes charges, given that he chose his victims based on their gender and skin color, prosecutors said.

“This defendant’s alleged violent and unprovoked attacks endangered the women he targeted and caused widespread fear in the community," Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. "I am committed to prosecuting all hate crimes where victims, including as alleged in this case, are targeted because of their gender, skin color or race.”

Covington, who lived in a nearby transitional housing center, was charged for six attacks inside the Morgan Avenue stop and a seventh attack at a nearby smoke shop, which came the day before his arrest on Jan. 4.

Victims from his attacks, the first of which was in August, slammed police after his arrest for not alerting the public earlier about the threat.

Prosecutors said Covington targeted light-skinned women.

He will appear in court again in April and is being held on $150,000 bail. Considered a mandatory violent persistent felony offender, he faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
