Video: Handgun Stolen From Off-Duty Officer's SUV in Bed-Stuy

An off-duty New York state prison guard returned to his parked SUV in Bed-Stuy last week and found his gun was missing, police say.

BED-STUY, BROOKLYN — An off-duty prison guard's semiautomatic gun was stolen from the glovebox of his parked SUV by two unidentified men early Friday morning, according to the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

The off-duty New York state corrections officer, a 61-year-old man, "parked his 2010 BMW X5 on the west side of 168 Kosciuszko St., on Friday, Sept. 30, at 4:20 a.m., leaving his Khar K9 9mm semiautomatic handgun (service weapon) in the glove compartment," the department said in a statement.

When the victim returned to his vehicle at 6 a.m., he discovered the firearm was missing, police said.

Detectives have since recovered surveillance video (below) showing two suspects gaining entry to the SUV at 4:56 a.m. through "an apparently unlocked front passenger side door."

Friday morning's handgun theft, which is being considered grand larceny, occurred within the NYPD's 79th Precinct, covering Bed-Stuy. According to official police statistics, through the end of September, grand larceny was up 19 percent from last year.
