By the Numbers: Bedford Highway Preps for Snow
The department has about 1,500 tons of salt on hand.

Highway division workers for the Town of Bedford were busy Wednesday preparing trucks, and planning for the possibility that snow could fall two nights in a row.
Public Works Commissioner Kevin Winn said the machines were in good shape, but a double dose of snow would be tough on crews. Strong gusts are a concern, too, he said, because trees may fall and lead to power outages, plus problems on the roads.

"We have about 1,500 tons of salt stored now," he told Patch Wednesday afternoon. "Employees will be called in as needed, up to 40 employees if we have to plow. Less if it is just a sanding/salting event. Each plow section is between nine and 12 miles, and typically has two employees. We are approximately half way through our budget of $810,000."
