Cuomo To Issue Protocols For Gyms To Reopen [POLL]

Gyms have been closed since March because of the new coronavirus pandemic. When they reopen, will you be in line to work out?

NEW YORK — To workout enthusiasts, the words of Gov. Andrew Cuomo during his news conference Friday must have sounded great. The governor, after saying that bowling alleys will be able to open Monday with restrictions, announced that he will be issuing protocols that would allow gymnasiums to reopen.

What the protocols will be when they are unveiled Monday is still uncertain, but at least it will be one step closer to being able to use your gym membership. That is something that hasn't been possible since the new coronavirus pandemic forced the state to shut down all businesses in March.

If the past is any indication, the protocols for gyms will likely include talk of social distancing, masks, reduction in capacity and lots of cleaning and disinfecting.

Take what is being required of bowling alleys, for example. The governor said they can operate at 50 percent maximum occupancy, with face coverings and social distancing required.

Every other lane must be closed and patrons must stay with their party at their assigned lane. Shared or rented equipment has to be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected between each use.

Feeling peckish while bowling? In New York City, you can forget it, because there is no indoor dining. Everywhere else, the wait staff will come to you and your party to take orders and bring food and beverages. You won't be able to just walk up to the counter or bar and say what you want.

Cuomo's announcement about gym protocols comes just after more than 1,500 gym owners across the state filed a class action lawsuit against him, the state and the attorney general, Gothamist reported.

The action was an attempt to force New York to allow them to reopen.

Attorney James G. Mermigis, who represents the gyms, which include CrossFit, Pilates and yoga studios and big box gyms, said his clients are also looking for compensation for lost revenue.
