Golden's Bridge FD 'Community Day' Scheduled At Firehouse
There will be a special dedication ceremony of the newly relocated American Legion World Wars monument.

GOLDENS BRIDGE, NY — A live burn with firefighters battling real flames in a makeshift house, a daring rope bailout and ladder rescue maneuvers from a second-story window and a fire extinguisher “how-to” on a real kitchen stove fire will be among a series of action-packed demonstrations at the Golden’s Bridge Fire Department Third Annual Community Day. The event will be held at the Firehouse — 254 Waccabuc Road/Route 138 in Goldens Bridge — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.
Along with these and other presentations, kids will get to pick and paint their own pumpkins from the fire department's pumpkin patch, operate a real water hose from a tanker and navigate the rooms of a smoky “fire,” among other fun crafts and exciting interactive activities.
For food, there will be a hamburger and hot dog barbecue, Halloween treats, snacks, cookies and donuts and other food and refreshments. There will also be prizes, promotional giveaways, fire truck rides, and more.

Everything is free, and the event will be held rain or shine, organizers said.
Fire Chief James McManus said past community days have attracted residents not only from Golden’s Bridge, but also from other parts of Lewisboro, Somers and North Salem, of which portions of the latter two are covered by the Golden’s Bridge Fire District.

“It’s our way of thanking residents for their support — and since it’s national fire prevention month, we hope that the demonstrations and information, although entertaining, will also help to focus people on things like having an escape plan and what to do — and what not to do — in the event of a house fire,” McManus said.
McManus said that community residents look forward to this annual event because of its country-fair-like atmosphere.
“The non-stop activities, the drama of real-life fire action, bead crafts, kids picking their pumpkins from the patch and the aroma of grilled burgers wafting through the air — it gives our small community event the feel of a country fair,” he said.
At this year’s event, there will be a special dedication ceremony of the American Legion World Wars monument, a 4-ton granite stone affixed with a pair of bronze plaques emblazoned with the names of 76 Goldens Bridge residents who served in WWI and WWII. The monument was recently relocated from its previous home, the Community House in Old Goldens Bridge, to its new home at the Golden’s Bridge Firehouse. Officials of the Town of Lewisboro and John B. Winter Jr. Post No. 1734 American Legion approved the relocation of the monument since the Community House is now under private ownership.
Other emergency services agencies that will be participating at the event will include the Westchester County Police, with its high-tech ESU Bomb Squad vehicle and a special police helicopter flyover; New York State Police, with its rollover vehicle; LVAC, with an ambulance and personnel providing blood pressure screenings, and the Lewisboro Police Department, with police officers installing infant and child car seats. The K-9 units of both the State Police and Lewisboro police will show off their skills during a rousing demonstration that is always a crowd favorite.
In conjunction with the Lewisboro police, families will be able to register their children in the Project Safe Child ID program. The Scouts of America will also be on hand with some challenging activities. During the event, young and old alike will get to explore a fire truck and try on gear. The event will culminate with fire truck rides for kids and adults of all ages, according to organizers.
