Katonah's Uovo Moderno ‘Celebrates the Senses’

The new kitchen shop offers products for home, table and living.

Bedford residents Mary Ann Hawley and her daughter, Ana Hawley, have opened a new kitchen and home store in Katonah that offers products for entertaining family and friends in a way that engages the senses.

The Hawleys—who spent many years living abroad in London and Japan but now call Rochambeau Farm on Guard Hill Road home—set out to design a store that shared their passion for products that were both beautifully designed and practical in use.

"We'd love to introduce classical modern designers whose names are in museums to a new generation, and we're also offering lines like Joseph Joseph Kitchenware," said Mary Ann Hawley, pointing out a range of items in the shop, including a striking silver Alessi bowl and a spatula designed with a practical ledge that prevents the head from touching worktop surfaces.

Hawley credited her daughter with the look of the store (see photos) and for creating some of its unique products, like bespoke pottery filled with soy candles that are refillable upon request.

It's not all modern design, Hawley notes: Asian wood crafted items are sprinkled among the modern utensils, glassware and table linens. And Uovo Moderno's edible inventory is growing and now includes Italian potato chips by Amica.

The furniture displayed in the store is available for custom production as well. At the center of the store is a long kitchen table made of maple butcher block and stained oak, resting on casters for ease of movement. Hawley an architectural designer, created the table while designing the modern farm in Bedford—featured in Bedford Magazine—where she lives with her husband and two children.

Asked how they named their store, Hawley replied that Uovo Moderno means "modern egg" in Italian.

"An egg is both a home and it is nourishing," she explained. "And we loved that and felt it fit what we were trying to do here in the store."

Uovo Moderno is located at 109 Katonah Avenue. The phone is (914) 486-0044. The hours are Mon. - Sat. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
