Colon health, advice from a dietician, chair yoga, smoking cessation, and wellness Wednesday among free virtual events
An expert panel on colorectal cancer prevention and advice from registered dietitians on developing personal, sustainable and healthy food habits are featured programs this March at Northern Westchester Hospital’s (NWH) Center for Healthy Living. Other free, virtual classes to help people feel better, get healthier, and have more fun include chair yoga, smoking cessation, becoming more relaxed in the kitchen, and Wellness Wednesday.
Located next to the Whole Foods Market at Chappaqua Crossing, the Center for Healthy Living supports health and wellness through education, health resources, diverse programing and referrals. With so many conflicting messages about food and nutrition, it is hard to know what is healthy. In conjunction with National Nutrition Month, a panel of registered dietitians and a physician will discuss developing personal, sustainable and healthy food habits and debunk popular nutrition myths. They will also explain the benefits of nutritional counseling, how the process works for all ages and how to make a meaningful difference in improving your health.
The panel will be moderated by Amy Rosenfeld, MS RD CDN of NWH; Sharon Zarabi RD, CDN, CPT, the Katz Institute of Women’s Health; Stephanie Di Figlia-Peck, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES of Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center; and Razia Jayman-Aristide, MD, MS-HPPL, FACP, of the Donald & Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Southside Hospital/Northwell Health. The Colorectal Conversation: Getting Candid About Colon Health
Thursday, March 25, 5 to 6 pm, live over Zoom
Education and action are two of the most powerful tools for reducing the risk of colon cancer. Colo-rectal surgeons and gastroenterologists from NWH and Phelps will discuss the latest colorectal cancer screening and prevention recommendations, facts about diagnosis and advanced treatment options, and the role of nutrition in prevention. When detected early, colon cancer is one of the curable forms of cancer. The panel will be moderated by Alexis Grucela, MD, section chief, Colorectal Surgery at NWH; Elie Abemayor, MD, director, Gastroenterology Division at NWH; and Paul Strombom, MD, affiliated physician at NWH and Phelps and Chair Phelps Cancer Committee. Join with your baby for an interactive, social get together. Meet other moms and share information about caring for your newborn, and yourself. Chair Yoga:
Monday, March 8, 15, 22 and 29, 11 am to Noon, live over Zoom
One of the gentlest forms of yoga, chair yoga adapts yoga positions and poses using a chair for support during standing and balancing poses, allowing for greater stability. Emphasis will be on breathing, balance, and taking things at your own pace. Chair yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical condition; beginners welcome. Toni Russo, MS, RN AHN-BC, RYT-220, a leader in NWH’s Integrative Medicine Team will lead the workshop. Free.

National Nutrition Month: Calming Cooking

Cooking can be stressful, but your time in the kitchen can also be a place to relax. Join RD Amy Rosenfeld and licensed clinical social worker Rachel Merchan for a combination cooking class and stress management seminar in honor of National Nutrition month. Participants will practice relaxation practices for an everyday routine and learn to make a healthy snake. Recipes are provided ahead of time so you can cook along. Free.
