New Year's Day 2021: What's Open, Closed In Hudson Valley

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — No matter how you say goodbye to 2020, it will be good to see the year that brought us the new coronavirus in the rearview mirror.
And just as 2020 started — remember how simple that time seemed? — New Year's Day 2021 will be a good time to sleep in and take it easy.
When and if you do venture out, here's what you can expect for the first day of the New Year around the Hudson Valley.

Government Buildings and Banks
- City, town, village, state and federal offices will be closed on New Year's Day.
- Post offices will be closed. Regular mail will not be delivered.
- Many banks will be open on New Year's Eve but closed on New Year's Day because it's a federal holiday.
Schools

- School districts are closed New Year's Day but should be returning to whatever schedules they have on Monday.
Libraries
- Libraries will be closed New Year's Day, with many having shorter hours on New Year's Eve
Public transportation
- Metro-North Railroad will be on a regular weekday schedule for Thursday, New Year's Eve. Friday, New Year's Day will follow the weekend/holiday schedule
- Bee-Line buses will be on a Sunday schedule for New Year's Day.
- Transport of Rockland: On New Year's Day, TOR #59, #91, #92, #93 and Loop #3 operate using the Sunday schedule. TOR #94, #95 and #97 DO NOT operate. Loop #1 & Loop #2 operate weekday schedules.
Stores
- Most supermarkets will have shorter hours for New Year's Eve. Many will be open on New Year's Day, but it would be best to call ahead to make sure.
- Trader Joe's, Costco and Aldi are among those that will be closed New Year's Day.
- A lot of the national chain stores, such as Walmart, Target and Best Buy will be open, but will likely have shortened hours.
