District officials said the students participated in large gatherings over the weekend without masks or social distancing.

BEDFORD, NY — Groups of Fox Lane High School students who attended large gatherings —without masks or social distancing — over the past weekend have been banned temporarily by school officials from returning to in-person or hybrid instruction.

The students will be placed on remote learning beginning Tuesday through Oct. 13, according to a letter from Superintendent Dr. Joel Adelberg and the Bedford Board of Education.

Adelberg and the board said in the letter that the news was sent with great regret.

They were informed about the gatherings by local police and community members.

"To say that we are disappointed in those students who partook in these activities is an understatement," the letter said. "There is no justification for putting themselves and others at significant risk."

Local authorities provided the district with the names of students they were able to identify as having participated in the gatherings. The names were shared with the Westchester County Department of Health, which will be cross-referencing the list of those in attendance with those already quarantined last week.

Each student who is placed on remote learning must submit a letter of clearance from their health-care provider or the county health department in order to return.

Additionally, students placed on remote learning won't be able to participate in any athletic or other school activities on campus.

"We recognize that we only have the names of those provided to us by local authorities," Adelberg and the board wrote. "If other students were present at these large gatherings or other events unaligned with COVID-19 protocols, we expect those students and families to do the right thing.

That means, Adelberg and the board said, they must identify themselves to the administration and they will be included on the list of those placed on remote learning.
