Calhoun Senior Selected as Nassau BOCES Education Partner 2014 Honoree

Chan Lian earns one of the most prestigious honors anyone involved in Nassau County education can receive.

Chan Lian, a senior at Calhoun High School, has been selected as a Nassau BOCES Education Partner 2014 Honoree.

The initiative at BOCES, which was started in 2007, is one of the most prestigious honors anyone involved in Nassau County education can receive.

The award seeks to honor those who “share the agency's commitment to providing the best possible education to learners of all ages and abilities.”

Lian came to the United States from Fujian, China four years ago. Not knowing any English, Chan was expected to graduate from Calhoun in 2015.

Last year, Lian was elected as vice president of the recently established International Buddy Club, which was created with the purpose of providing orientation for newly arrived English language learners.

Lian’s ideas and leadership were instrumental in expanding the original peer mentoring focus of the club to include community building within the ESL program through various parties and events, as well as orchestrating a holiday gift-giving donation to a local home for pregnant teens and young mothers, some of whom attended Calhoun.

This year, Lian was elected as president of the International Buddy Club.

Many think that she is more than deserving of the honor.

"Chan Lian embodies this honor in that she has made a difference in the lives of those around her from the moment she walked through the doors of Sanford H. Calhoun High School," ESL teacher Heather Glick said.  "She is truly a wonderful person.”
