Meet The Long Island Olympic Delegation

Five Long Islanders will be representing the country in the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang in February.

The United States has sent nearly 240 athletes to South Korea to compete in the 2018 Olympic Games. And five of those extraordinarily talented athletes are from Long Island.

The five Long Islanders are among 18 from New York who will be competing in a variety of events in Pyeongchang, where the opening ceremony was held Friday. Here are your local athletes:

Daly is competing in the skeleton, which is a face-first race down an ice track on a small sled. But Daly is no stranger to it: he was a member of Team USA in 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, too. The 31-year-old attended SUNY Plattsburgh, where he ran track and field and graduated with a degree in public relations.

Matt Gilroy, North Bellmore

Gilroy was born in Mineola and grew up in North Bellmore. He will be playing on the Team USA ice hockey team this year, which is his first Olympic appearance. Gilroy is well-practiced on the ice, though. He signed with the New York Rangers in 2009, and had an impressive college hockey career, too. In his senior year at Boston University in 2008-09, he received the Hobey Baker Award and co-captained the team to an NCAA championship, making him the fifth player ever to win the Hobey Baker Award and a championship in the same season.

Justin Krewson, East Northport

Krewson, an East Northport native, is appearing in his first Olympic Games this year as part of the luge team. Though this is his first time in the Olympics, Krewson has been competing in luge events since 2010. He now lives in Lake Placid, where he is a member of the volunteer fire department.

Mortensen is joining Krewson on the luge team. But this is not his first time on the Olympic ice. He competed in the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, where he placed 14th.

Devin Logan

Logan was born in Oceanside before her family moved to Vermont. She's no stranger to the Olympic snow, either. The freestyle skier earned herself a silver medal in the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia.

Alex Gamelin

Gamelin is a bit of an anomaly. He grew up in Merrick and trained in Bellmore, according to the Bellmore Herald. However, the ice dancer isn't skating for Team USA — he's competing on behalf of South Korea. In order to play in the Olympics for the country, he became a Korean citizen in 2016.
