Nassau Protests Cause Road Closures, Delays: Police

Long stretches of the Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road will be closed and nearby parkways may be affected as well, police said.

UPDATE, 2:30 P.M.: Ahead of the 3 p.m. scheduled start of the protests, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said that parkways would not be closed.

"Motorists should expect traffic delays today on Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road from the Valley Stream train station to Wantagh Parkway due to peaceful demonstrations," she said. "There may also be closures on nearby roadways, but all major parkways will remain open."

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — The Nassau County Police Department is warning drivers of road closures and traffic delays due to protests planned Friday.

Starting at noon, protests are planned on the Sunrise Highway and Merrick Road from the Valley Stream train station to the Wantagh Parkway. Police say there may also be closures on nearby parkways. The closures could affect up to 10 miles of roadway.

Yesterday, thousands of protesters marched from Merrick Road onto the Southern State Parkway and shut it down for about two hours.
