Vaping/E-Cigs – More Dangerous Than You Think

a presentation for parents, families, students & Community members; presented by Amanda Cioffi, LMSW Education & Training Supervisor LICADD

There is a crisis at hand. E-cigarettes are being used at alarming rates by middle school and high school students nationwide. Please join the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD and the Community Parent Center to learn more about the dangers of Vaping/E-cigarettes on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 7:00pm at the Brookside School. “E-Cigs/Vaping – More Dangerous Than You Think” is being presented by Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

E-cigarettes are very popular with young people. Their use has grown dramatically in the last five years. Today, more high school students use e-cigarettes than regular cigarettes. The use of e-cigarettes is higher among high school students than adults. The use of vapes/e-cigarettes has become a tremendous and real threat to our Bellmore-Merrick school age children. We have seen a spike in the possession and use of vapes/e-cigarettes, which Governor Cuomo has banned from school campuses in New York. The increase in use in Bellmore-Merrick mirrors the use in schools across Nassau and Suffolk Counties, New York State and the USA.

E-cigarette use poses a significant – and avoidable – health risk to young people in the United States. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, use of e-cigarettes by high school students increased 900% from 2011 to 2015. Besides increasing the possibility of addiction and long-term harm to brain development and respiratory health, e-cigarette use is associated with the use of other tobacco products that can do even more damage to the body. Even breathing e-cigarette aerosol that someone else has exhaled poses potential health risks. In addition, vaping devices are compatible with marijuana, cocaine, THC liquids and other drugs, making substance abuse easier and less publicly recognizable for teens and young adults.
