Eleven long-time volunteers of Mount Kisco's Independent Fire Company were honored on Saturday while its newest firetruck was dedicated.
The volunteers, who have a collective 646 years of experience, have year served at least 50 years. Six of them have volunteered for at least 60 years. Their starting years span from the late 1940s to the early 1960s.
Independent is one of the Mount Kisco Volunteer Fire Department's four fire companies.
The dedication, held in front of the company's firehouse off of Lexington Avenue, was attended by fellow firefighters and several elected officials.
Mayor Michael Cindrich, who gave out certificates of appreciation, said to the long-time volunteers that they “inspired generations yet to come to walk in your foot steps."
“Six-hundred forty-plus years of service is remarkable,” said Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham, whose district includes Mount Kisco.
State Assemblyman David Buchwald, who also represents Mount Kisco and has an office in its downtown, gave thanks for the fire protection that is provided.
It was explained that the new firetruck, a Seagrave model, was chosen after a search that lasted for several years and with a committee. It was also noted that the old one, a 1989 Pierce, was donated to the Town of Broome's fire department, which is located upstate in Schoharie County.
The new truck was received in August, according to Jon Bruno, a Mount Kisco firefighter who is a second lieutenant.
John Marshall III, a former Mount Kisco fire commissioner who works for Westchester County's Department of Emergency Services, said “I think it's wonderful.” Marshall was happy with the long period of service of the fire company's honorees.
Jason Wayman, a chief for the Town of Broome Volunteer Fire Department, was invited to the ceremony. Asked about it, he said it is "great.”
