Tornado Confirmed In New Castle Is Tuesday's Third In New York

It was one of four tornadoes to hit the metro area.

NEW CASTLE, NY — The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado touched down in New Castle Tuesday evening. It was bigger than the tornadoes that hit Stony Point in Rockland County and Ronkonkoma on Long Island.

Plus there's one confirmed in Connecticut, and they're investigating another possible twister there too.

The New Castle tornado had an estimated maximum wind speed of 110 mph and its maximum path width was 300 yards. It traveled 3.75 miles and left hard and soft wood trees uprooted and snapped along the path.

"Our DPW crews worked overnight & all day with Con Ed crews to cut the wires and clear the trees. We had 17 roads closed. Shingle House Road in Millwood is still closed. That's where the tornado touched down," said New Castle Town Supervisor Rob Greenstein. "Major work is currently being done at that location. We still have 515 customers without power - down from over 1,000. The estimated time of restoration is 11:00 pm."

The Stony Point tornado, categorized also as an EF1, had an estimated maximum wind speed of 100 mph, its path width was 100 feet, and it only traveled on the ground for a mile. It, too, uprooted and downed trees.

A third tornado hit New York last night, in Ronkonkoma around 11:20 p.m. The tornado was categorized as an EF0, with winds reaching between 65 and 85 MPH. Still, several homes sustained damage to siding, gutters and outdoor furniture. Trees were also cut down by the winds with two or three falling on cars.
