What You Need To Know: Chappaqua Patch School Election Guide

The annual school budget election has historically had low voter turnout, but the issues on the ballot could mean big changes for everyone.

CHAPPAQUA, NY — On Tuesday, voters will get the final say on proposed school budgets and property tax levies. Here's a quick guide to understanding the choices and making your voice heard at the polls.

CHAPPAQUA SCHOOL DISTRICT:

Voters will be asked to approve the new school district budget. The proposed budget is $130,460,188, with a 1.73 percent increase over the 2020-21 spending package.

School officials said the tax levy will increase by 2.03 percent if the budget is approved by voters on Tuesday.

One board of education seat and one library board seat are on the ballot as well.

There are two candidates for the open Chappaqua Central School District seat:

  • Ellen Exum
  • Cailee Hwang

The candidates for the open Chappaqua Library seat are:

  • Shohreh Anand
  • Karin Sobeck

A Proposition question will also be on the ballot. Voters will be asked to approve $650,000 for a Greeley Gym Boiler Room project. The boiler spending will not change the levy amount.

The annual budget vote and board election will be from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 18 at Horace Greeley High School, in the gymnasium.

BYRAM HILLS SCHOOL DISTRICT:

The proposed budget is $95,243,544, with a 0.75 percent increase over the 2020-21 spending package.

School officials said the tax levy will increase by 1 percent if the budget is approved by voters. The school system touts this increase as being among the lowest in the region.

According to the district, the spending plan will allow for no reductions in staffing, athletic programs or extracurricular activities.

There are also a total of two school board trustee seats to be filled for three-year terms. The candidates are:

  • Scott Levy (incumbent)
  • Petrie Verma

The annual budget vote and board election will be from 6:30a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 18, at Crittenden Middle School.
