Summer Veterans Stand Down Comes To Freeport

Friday's event is to help support the estimated 40,000 to 50,000 veterans in Nassau County with clothing, food and other necessities.

FREEPORT, NY — Nassau County residents who've served in the military are getting the support they need.

The 34th Summer Veterans Stand Down, in conjunction with the county's Veterans Service Agency, is scheduled for Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at the Freeport Armory.

Due to the pandemic, the event will be held via drive-thru, or people walk through if they don't have access to a vehicle.

"You will get new sneakers, socks [and] all kinds of toiletries," Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said.

She said information is always vital to the estimated 40,000 to 50,000 veterans at the bi-yearly Stand Down.

"In normal times, there will be folks with tables offering help with housing assistance, rental assistance, mental health counseling assistance [and] job assistance," she said. "This time, it's going to be fliers."

Curran anticipates having full interaction for the November Stand Down event.
