U.S. Navy Tall Ships Dock At Freeport Nautical Mile

The 20th annual Annapolis Midshipmen Port of Call kicked off Thursday. Vessel tours are available through Saturday.

FREEPORT, NY - United States Navy Tall Ships, in an annual tradition, arrived at the Village of Freeport's Nautical Mile Thursday morning.

The ships will be in the area at the Woodcleft Avenue Esplanade through Sunday.

Mayor Robert Kennedy and the village board joined local veterans and civic leaders to welcome the U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen into the port at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

The arrival of the tall sailing ships at the Nautical Mile has been a summer tradition for the past 20 years.

The Freeport Nautical Esplanade is a popular port-of-call that the young midshipmen visit along the East Coast each year before returning to Annapolis.

The midshipmen are in training for service as commissioned officers in the Navy.
