EAST GARDEN CITY, NY — Nassau County police arrested two men they say tried to steal thousands of dollars of merchandise from a Macy's, and attacked a store security officer when they were trying to flee.

According to police, around 8:15 p.m. on May 27, two men tried to steal $4,663 of merchandise from the Macy's in the Roosevelt Field Mall, at 630 Old Country Road. As the two men — William Erdogan, 30, of Monroe Street, Franklin Square, and Johnathan Calandra, 23, of Superior Street, Port Jefferson —approached the exit, police say they were stopped by an Asset Protection Detective from the store. One of the men then punched him in the face, police said.

The two tried to flee, but before they could get away they were stopped by police officers and arrested.
